Marafivirus (genus)

The genus Marafivirus contains viruses similar to the Maize rayado fino virus (Marafivirus maydis). This virus and the citrus sudden death-associated virus (Marafivirus citri) cause important diseases of maize and citrus respectively. In contrast to other tymoviruses, marafiviruses cannot be transmitted mechanically and require leafhopper vectors like Dalbulus maidis that propagate the viruses and spread them in a persistent manner.

Like other tymoviruses, the particles are isometric and about 30 nm in diameter. The genome contains one molecule of single stranded RNA with a conserved region, the marafibox. The ORFs of the replication-associated polyprotein and the capsid protein are fused.
